A few months back I started having an issue where Adobe Media Encoder would just completely stop in the middle of an h264 render of an After Effects project. It seemed to occur if I was doing a batch of renders that took hours to complete. Sometimes rebooting would help but not always.

One thing that I started to notice is that the fans in my 16” MBP i9 2019 would go from being loud to completely shutting off once Media Encoder locked up on the render.

This issue seems to have only gotten worse and more frequent. To the point that I now have to render directly from within After Effects to .mov and then import that into Media Encoder to do the h264 render.

I don’t know if my MBP is starting to fail or what. When Media Encoder locks up on the render, everything else seems to work fine in macOS. So I don’t believe it is the CPU or GPU failing. My understanding is that the Apple T2 chip does h264 encoding and I was thinking that maybe that could be the culprit and possibly be failing. But I haven’t been able to find anything online that mentions the T2 failing in this way. I’ve never had any issues booting into macOS or using Touch ID.

Any thoughts?

I’m all for upgrading to the new MBP but I’d have to wait until May to do so.

Okay this may not help you at all and I know this is an older post - so hopefully you have found a fix. I will kick in my 2-cents worth. I have a 2021 M1 Max 14" and I have had issues with Media Encoder V.22. I would send a Premiere Pro project and it would start to encode then hang. I finally changed the renderer from Metal to Mercury Playback Engine Software Only and now it flies through renders.

I totally get we are not in the same ballpark when it comes to MBP specs but I found it interesting that V.19 worked on my M1 and then when I installed the update V.22 it did not. Just a thought.
