I happened to observe something strange on my 16"MBP. I had a long running task going(about 16hours), which is very processor intensive, and the fans were on full. At some point, while the task was still running, the fans stopped had slowed down to the point where I couldn't hear them, and i noticed the performance had dropped to about 25%.

I checked the system log, but couldn't find any crash (I had no idea what else to look for).

Is this expected behavior for when the system gets too hot?

If the fan system cannot cool the processor and GPU, decreasing clocks speed kicks in. And in a MBP 16, the fans never stop. They are just less audible as when they slow down.
