Will you downsize from the Intel 16" MacBook Pro to the Apple Silicon 14" MacBook Pro?

  • Yes. I would like a smaller model if performance difference between the 2 models is small.

I'm curious for all of you 16" MacBook Pro owners:
Are you planning to replace your Intel 16" MacBook Pro with the rumored 14" MacBook Pro when it's released?

With Apple silicon, we don't yet know if there will be a delta in performance between the rumored 14" MacBook Pro & the 16" MacBook Pro like there is now with the Intel models. I suspect some people will want the smaller footprint if the performance difference between the 2 sizes is marginal, given what we've seen with the entry-level MacBook models thus far.

What say you?

If there is parity between the specs then the choice will be difficult and will wait and see.
Currently due to WFH we have monitors set up so most of the time my 16” is hooked up, so screen size is irrelevant. However when this isnt the case, 16” all the way for desk use, as it is an absolute joy to work on like this.

I was planning on getting the 16 but then saw the option of the 14 + a 17.3 external portable monitor. Best of both worlds: portability and then the bigger screen in a hotel room or the library. Not a cheap way to go though.

I'm on the fence. I have an M1 mac mini at the office, but I can't take it to a meeting room for a Zoom call. So a 14" would be nice to lug to the office and back.
On the other hand, at home, I can use all the screen real estate I can buy. I have a 27" screen, but for music production, it's great to have a second decent sized screen for plug-ins and the mixer. I was considering a mac mini there as well, but then I'd still have to buy another machine for the Zoom calls, which is stupid.

Nope. No Bootcamp support sucks... so I won't be getting 14" M1X MBP.

exactly. My M1 Air is sitting in the closet now. the games are just too limited in parallels. I will watch and see how it goes for the next year or two. The only release I am waiting on now is Jurassic World Evolution 2.

I think a lot more people will in this generation than any before it, if the rumours are to believed the CPU will be the same and the 16 may just have improved graphics. 14 is also pretty close to the old 15 inch size and probably very usable with a scaled resolution desktop

Personally I don't think 14-14.1" is going to make a meaningful difference over 13.3". The 15.4" set to 1680x1050 is pretty much the bare minimum for using multiple windows on a single desktop, or for comfortably using split screen. Anything less and you're really looking at having to use multiple desktops and flick back and forward between them (the same as the current 13"). Yes you can set the 13" to 1680x1050, but it's uncomfortably small for sustained use, and the new default resolution isn't going to get close enough to be usable in this way either. The 16" just gives you a little bit more space and makes it a bit more comfortable over the preceding 15", I expect the 14" to be the same for the one app at a time use case.

True, fair points. Will have to see how it is in practice

I‘m in for the 14“, admittedly coming from a 15“. But I do wan‘t 32GB RAM and expect the SoC to be fairly similar to the 16“. If it isn‘t, I might change my mind.

I really like the real estate of the 16", and I'd like to keep the extra real estate, but the price will probably be the limiting factor for me. With the rumored price increases for the 14 and 16 MBPs, I don't think I could justify getting a 16" if the performance is identical to the 14", especially if the price is around $2000 for the 14" base model. I may hold onto the 16" Intel MBP for a few more years, finish school, and then hop over to an M-whatever machine after I'm done and don't have to pay tuition anymore lol.

I wonder if the high-end 13” MBP ($1799 price point) goes away with the new 14” slotting in at that price point. If they go $2000 for the base 14”, I may have to sit this one out as I couldn’t imagine what the 16” would cost.

I still think the pricing for the MBP will remain the same as the 4 port models that are going to be replaced.

The 16" really does make a difference to me if I'm working on it without an external display for hours on end, both in terms of comfort and the fact I can have two apps open side by side if need be.

My colleagues asked me the same question recently. My answer was "Definitely, no".
1) Screen size matters (FinalCut / Netflix)
2) I think Apple's current M1 and future M2 (or M1X) GPU still will not compete with dedicated graphics from AMD (Radeon Pro 5300/5500/5600). This means that Intel Macs are better for games / 3D design / GPU intense apps.
3) Sued related to cracked screens on M1 macs...I do not believe that screens can crack on their own, but time will tell who is right.

I probably will not replace my Intel based 16" MBPro for a while, since I need the ability to use a VM with Intel based Windows environments, something not supported on Apple Silicon hosted VMs. However if I do make the move (I will probably buy myself a Windows machine to run my specific Windows programs) I will stick with the 16" screen size. I find the lack of real estate on the smaller screen machines too much of a restriction especially for FCP and LR.

At the moment I am even considering abandoning the Apple MBPro entirely when they move to Apple Silicon since I need the ability to run SQL Server and I doubt that ARM based Windows will ever get to that point. I would have to abandon FCP and move to Adobe Premier for example but in the end that may be the most cost effective solution rather than have both a Windows machine and MBPro. The price of evolution.

As soon as it's released, I'm selling my whole workstation (Windows desktop, external USB-C monitor, and 13" M1 Air) and getting as a 16" as my only digital device other than my smartphone.

I want to have the same workflow wherever I am.
