Hi,

I wondered whether you could help. I’m trying to figure out what the max theoretical speed of the 16” MBP is. I‘m not an expert by any means, so I did a bit of research in regards to the max theoretical speed of a 5Ghz channel on 802.11ac and that seemed to be 1300 MBits per sec. However, when I looked further I started to come across 802.11ac wave 2 with MUMIMO use of multiple antennas to get multiple gigabits per sec speeds. I believe the MBP wireless card has 3 antennas? Or 3 streams? What does that mean exactly? What theoretically is the max speed?

Thanks for any information

Yes, it's 1300 MBits/sec, but your router has to be a 3x3 or 4x4. My Linksys Velop system (and most other "mesh" systems I believe) is 2x2, so to get the maximum speed with my MBP (at least in my office, where I use the MBP 99% of the time), I added a Linksys RE9000 access point that does 3x3, which is set up as its own separate WiFi network.

Ok thanks. So with 2x2 would you be expecting around 800Mbits/sec maximum theoretical?

I have tested with a brand new 8x8 wifi6 router (of course using wifi5).
Although the theoretical speed is 1300, I can only reach around 600, which is slightly higher than my iPhone's 530.
iPhone has 2x2 80mhz only, but I did not see much of a difference in my testing (around 50-100 from 16inch mbp).
I have tested using both 1gbps ethernet and iperf.

The performance is quite underwhelming, about the same as my late 2013 model. They basically have the same wifi performance with wifi5 3x3 @80mhz

That’s interesting, is the new WiFi 6 able to go to 160MHz channels not WiFi 5?

What router/access point were you using for this test? Not questioning your testing just curious what make/brand.

Is there anyway you can combine 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz channels for combined speeds at once?

It depends on apple, but I doubt any apple device will get 160mhz support on wifi 6. iPhone 11 currently has 2x2 @ 80mhz, with 1200mbps speed.

Don't know about OP, I am using AX12

Not possible.

Similar result here. Using the 3x3 access point, I get 500-600. Connected to the 2x2, I get 350-400.
I have did some research, it seems wifi has about 50% loss due to conflicts, meta data etc. I wish we will see 4x4 wifi6@160mhz on apple devices someday.
