I am wanting to hear others opinions on 16 vs 32 gb ram for music production specifically. I do not do other intensive tasks and this will be the main focus for the computer. I have been reading about newer MacBook Pros having such fast SSD speeds that this helps with ram. I put my samples on external SSD already, so I'm guessing this won't matter. The upgraded base model with 2.3 i9 and 1 TB SSD looks like a good overall model for price.

Sure would be nice if you could buy the 16 and then chose to upgrade it later if you need it, wouldn't it?

How many audio and MIDI tracks do you typically work with? Are you doing large orchestral templates? Do you use heavy Kontakt libraries like Spitfire or 8dio? Do you use a lot of intensive VSTs/AUs like Serum and Omnisphere? Do you use a lot of effects on your tracks?

that’s really where the extra RAM will help you.

note that plenty of people make do with 16GB or even 8GB of RAM but often needing to freeze tracks in place

do you find yourself currently hitting RAM limits? That’s the best way to judge what you need

Most people just finance these things anyways.. I say just go for it and remember to make your minimum monthly payment at 18% interest! 🙃

I'm currently trying to make the same decision.
Have a 16GB preparing for shipment, but have been debating returning it once it arrives and going 32GB.

Right now I'm on a 16GB 2015, and haven't had problems with hitting limits or seeing memory utilization hitting yellow/red levels in the activity monitor, though in a few years who knows how RAM hungry things may end up getting.

Idk maybe it's my personal problem but just running High Sierra at idle (no apps open) takes ~12GB of ram, leaving me only 4 until I would max out at 16. 32 gives me plenty of headroom.

THIS. I'm in the same shoes. I do a lot of design work and often have 20-30 tabs open + various other apps at the same time constantly. Still debating. What did you end up deciding @grantwall??
I think I've gotten the OS pop up message a few times telling me not enough memory to perform XYZ..and then I go and clear my HD (only got 512GB right now...), and only to later realize the OS was talking about the RAM memory, not storage memory : (. Doesn't happen often, but does make me 2nd guess if I should get 32...
