My G5 case mod (warning: Intel inside!)

Hi All,

Just thought I'd post some pictures of the progress I've made so far on my G5 case mod. I've always loved the G5's, but these days they are not powerful enough for me. So I thought I'd get the dremel out and see what I could do.

I've tried to keep the inside as original looking as possible but unfortunately I'm going to have to move the hard drive caddy due to the height of the motherboard.

The new spec is:

Ivy bridge I5 3.4 @ 4.2
GTX 670 2gb
Gigabyte Z77X-D3H
16gb Corsair ram
120gb Sandisk Ultra SSD

Sometime, I'd like to do a mod where the back ports, and everything else is completely the same.

I plan on doing the same with a busted G5.

I would like to know:

• How you dealt with making a cover plate for the motherboard outputs below the PCI ports.
  
• How you wired the "ON" switch to the ATX Mobo?
  
• How you managed to fit the Mobo to the body of the case?

For what I do (gaming) the 3570k is more than enough, I did weigh up an I7 but it wasn't worth the extra for the price/performance ratio.

For the backplate and motherboard tray I used the laser hive

And for the front ports and power switch i used BlackCH's cable

I would have used a 3930K...

Yeah because games need advanced hyper threading and 4 cores...

An over clocked i5 is a tank!

After blowing up a power supply (whoops!), I've finally finished my mod!

I've sadly had to cut the plastic shield to allow for the pcie power connectors and also in front of the sata and power cables for the hdd's, but over all I'm very happy with the result.

If I had to do it again I think I would go with an m-atx board so I wouldn't have to move the hdd caddy and that way I could still use the internal speaker/fan assembly at the front of the case to keep it looking even more original.
