So I heard that apple increased the replacement price up to $79 now.
Little annoyed, is this true?

They are just making the choice easier for customers not to go with Applecare as the value just isn't there anymore.

Might as well just get a case or, if it happens to break, pay for a out-of-warranty replacement.

I wonder, if we keep our iphone 5's, does this price increase change for those of us who purchased it before? Or do we still pay the $49?

Very true. So you buy applecare+ for $99 and you break the phone once and pay $79 for a total of $178. You only save $51 for one incident based on the $229 out of warranty replacement fee.

You save a total of $201 with applecare if you break your phone twice. Not that huge of a savings.
