Right now I use a Mid-2011 MBA w/ 4 GB RAM and 1.8 GHz Intel Core i7 and it runs a little slow. Its screen broke so instead of spending $600 to repair it (even if I do it myself) I sold it for $600 that I want to dedicate to a new computer.
Occasionally I use Logic, other recording software, and Aperture for some more intensive computing.
My day to day includes 2-4 Page/Word documents, 5 Preview PDFs, Finder, Calendar, Safari with a bunch of tabs, Reminders, Notes, etc all open at the same time.
So if I get an MBP 13" Retina I can go from a 2.4 GHz Dual Core i5 to a 2.8 GHz Dual Core i7 for $270 and up to 16 GB RAM for another $270.
If I get a new MBA 11" I go from a 1.3 GHz Dual Core i5 to a 1.7 GHz Dual Core i7 for $140 (I will upgrade the RAM).
With those price ranges in mind, can anyone give me an idea if paying for these upgrades is reasonable considering what I use computers for?
