After upgrading to Mavericks I've noticed a strange difference in behaviour of my login window on my iMac - sometimes the login window doesn't respond to the keyboard.

background:
in Energy Saver, the display is set to sleep after 15 minutes. The computer itself is set to never sleep. There is no screensaver set to activate. We use fast user switching among several users on this Mac, and the login window is set to display the list of users. I leave my userid logged in but switch to the login window when I'm away from the computer, reguiring a password to login again.

normally when I get back to the computer, I can hit any key to wake up the display, then immediately type the first letter of my name to select my username, then type my password to login

however, after upgrading to Mavericks, the first keystroke wakes the display but then no matter what I type nothing happens on the login screen. I cannot select my username (nor any other username) using the keyboard. it's like the keyboard is being totally ignored after the first keystroke upon waking.

BUT if I first click the mouse, I can then type the first letter of my name and then enter my password. Also, if I exit to the login window but then login again before the display sleeps, this problem doesn't seem to happen, keyboard works as expected on the login window.

This is different behaviour of the login screen than I've noticed with any prior version of Mac OS.

anybody else notice this? and is there a fix?
