OK, I've been trying this for the past 30 minutes with two different 5S and both are experiencing the same issue, while a 4S does it just fine.
Here's what's happening: (let me know if you can replicate it)
1. Find a group photo with more than 7 clear faces. (You can try with this photo I googled).
2. Put the phone pretty close to it, so the phone only sees the photo.
3. Let it recognize the faces.
4. Take a photo of the photo with your 5S and the default camera app.
I'm getting the same result everytime: Shutter sound plays fine, but no actual photo is taken. In the lower left corner appears a black space and the app seems kind of frozen for a few seconds, then everything goes back to normal.
Also, if you have erased another photo seconds before, it will magically reappear.
Now it's when you tell me I've got two faulty 5Ss, lol
