.....for those experiencing this exasperating phenomenon.....
Here's a "work-round" for that not so merry merry-go-round:

Whenever finger ID scanner fails to recognize your print...
1. Swipe up on lockscreen to open Control Centre
2. Click on Calculator (or any icon)
3. That icon app will open
4. Once opened, click Home Button.....and.....you're " in like Flynn"

Of course we shouldn't have to go thru such acrobatics.....but that's another story, right?.....

What do you mean you're in? After you hit the home button to close the quick app it should bring you back to the lock screen. If you're implying you're in like you've unlocked the phone and bypassed the touch ID then there is something terribly wrong.

Yes - that's precisely what I'm saying.
Doing that (at least for me) - completely bypasses the glitch. It would be interesting to know whether this procedure works for others.....
And what it means in terms of problems actual cause

Mine goes back to the lock screen when I follow your directions. Ironically I think my touch ID works better when my fingers are somewhat greasy after eating

He is not talking about bypassing touch ID. he is talking about making touch ID work when it doesn't acknowledge a finger on the sensor.
