I just got my ebay PB G4. 15" 1.67, 512MB, 80GB. It was listed as "for parts", the seller stated he tried to delete a user and started getting kernel panics. I guess he never tried reinstalling the system. I'm running 10.4.11. I'll try to scrounge up some more ram. Should I go up to 10.5.8?

Would not upgrade with only 512MB ram, would be much slower than Tiger.

I say that as I got an iBook G4 1.33GHz with 512mb memory. TFFx24 can really eat up memory with a few tabs open, leaving only megabytes to spare and a huge VM. Added another 256mb stick I had in a box of parts and it runs a lot better on Leopard.

Wow! Quite the purchase! I would go up to 10.5.8, it does run decently on 512 MB of RAM (at least in my experience)but if you have the dust to blow bring it up to at least 1 GB.

Is this a DLSD model? If so you may be the luckiest person in this forum...

Similar situation to how I bought my PowerBook. Was listed as 'untested and for parts' as it didn't have a battery/charger. Took a chance with it and I've had a rock solid DLSD/HR G4 ever since. Bung 2GB RAM in there and then upgrade to Leopard - it makes a world of difference and it won't cost you much at all, £10 ($15) tops.
