It 's the year of the laptop and apple will be blowing away the non-pro laptop competition by introducing the 17" iBook. Get in line quick, demand will be hot!!!

oh snap!

But, seriously, it is impossible for an iBook to have a 17 inch screen. I dont even know why this thread hasnt been deleated yet. The only thing the iBook could possibly get is a 15 inch screen, or maybe turned into a laptop/tablet conversion, if you wanted to stretch. But definately not a 17 inch screen. That would be pointless.

foofan, you're joking right? the 17" screen would be very expensive.

this is a joke, right? :confused: :rolleyes:
yeah, of course it's a joke!

but why do you guys think the 17 inch LCD is a pro-only LCD? they said it was the same LCD as you will find in an iMac.

the 17" powerbook is a desktop replacement. the 17" iMac is a desktop.
they may have the same screen, but the distinction is clear. especially price and look-wise :p

my comment was more to say that the reason they wouldn't put a 17 inch screen on an iBook is because there is no market for it, not that the LCD is enormously expensive. the iMac FP 17 is only 1800$. if the LCD were $1000, the profit margin on that thing would be small indeed. it's more than conceivable that apple could front a 17 inch iBook with all the specs of the 12/14s and charge ~$1800 for it. there's just no reason to.

Hey, I like the thought of an iBook with 7 hours battery life... :p :D

Lol, if the iBook had a 17" screen, it'd probably be more like .7 hours. :)

Well, probably not, but if it had a 17" screen, then it wouldn't get MORE battery life than it does now, would it? :p

what about a wide screen 15.4 inch tibook/alubook and ibook released at the same time?

e-machines and others already use the large 15.4 inch sized wide screen format

if that flys, then release the 17 inch ibook and keep it under two grand

Just look at the current models: Bigger screen = more battery life.
12"=5 hours
14"=6 hours
so, the 17" model should be = 7,5 hours

since every inch of screen size seems to provide about 30 minutes of battery life :D :p

theoretically, the 23" Tablet Mac would run for approx. 11 hours :D can anyone say iPod? Sorry, I am drifting away...

EDIT: Of course this is not serious, I apologize :D

the lcd itself for the 17" powerbook must cost about $1000, imagine an ibook that would cost you about $2400.

When I bought my iBook dual-usb in August of 2001, I only got 256MB in it (but 20GB drive, dvd player) and it was around 1800 IIRC.

so why the hell is everyone all touchy about someone predicting a 17" iBook joke or not. It's hardly a life-threatening discussion. Someone said something about why this thread hasn't been deleted yet! MR is a place for open discussion and users are entitled to their views within reason.

A bit of fun. But I can't believe all the people giving serious, logical responses. Lighten up!

Hey pass that stuff over here. *takes a hit*

*shakes head* See you got your release dates mixed up. The 17" iBook is NEXT week.

The 21" fold out projection screen PowerBook with Dual 3Thz G6's and detachable quad speaker surround sound system is due out THIS week along with the ultra secret OSX Tiger. You see Panther was a smokescreen. Tiger is the real deal with its 3d GUI interface running the Amethyst Extreme engine. :p

Hey, get 'em quick - the 15" Newton!!!

Yes, not only is the Newton being brought back, but with a big 15" color screen!

"Our market research indicates that many people are frustrated with the small screen of today's PDAs and cellphones," commented Steve Joswiak, Apple's VP of hardware design. "The solution is a PDA which is big enough to run today's applications."

OK that's going to far. NEVER kid about my precious......Newton. ;)

*sobs uncontrollably* Dang you Jobs for killing off my baby. :( If the Newton was still around it would drop kick MS's Pocket PC\Tablet PC effort into the toilet.

Anyways in summary. There isn''t going to be an 17" iBook until there is something bigger\better on the PowerBook side of things. OLED maybe? Apple has a vested interest in making the 2 series as different as possible to justify the cost of a PowerBook. If they brought out a 17" iBook why buy a 17" PowerBook?

bigger chassis, more room for larger battery (think ibook 12 vs 14)
