Ok, so my aunt's old imac has died...im 99 percent sure its the hard drive...can these boot from an external drive instead of replacing the hard drive internally?it will boot with the recovery disc but doesnt see the drive to install it to...thinking of telling her to buy a cheap 250gb usb portable drive and just trying to install it to that...
 
I do not see why your plan should not work.
Be aware however that the iMac you are using only has USB 2.0 ports.
It only transfers data in one direction at a time and is overall slower than USB 3.0 so you might take quite the performance hit. I'd recommend firewire instead.
