17" macbook pro 2011 optical drive problems

Hope someone can help. I've not used the drive for about 6 months and there have been a few updates in that time, now I'm trying to play a CD/DVD and neither will work. I can insert it ok and it goes through the motions a couple of times trying to read the discs but then it ejects the disc.. I have tried this many times :-(. Is there a diagnostic programme or can anyone suggest any way to fix this please. Thanks

Have you tried with a variety of discs? Mine did that once and the disc turned out to be faulty.
