I've noticed that every 5 mins I hear a short beep coming from the MBP! I don't know what it is! do you get it? it's not from the speakers, it's from the inside!

But it's weird because my system has never lagged or anything even with lots of windows open! it's hard to believe it could be a RAM issue! what if the beep doesn't happen when I take it in store? would they do some sort of test on it?

so what is happening right now is that your computer is running absolutely fine just you hear a beep come out of it every once and a while? how often does it happen? if its not affecting the performance is it something you can live with? if you answered no to the last question i would call apple or take it to a store.

it's around every 2 minutes to every 5 minutes... everything is working fine. I'm just scared it might deteriorate down the line. BTW this is my first ever Mac.

When I first got my MBP, it worked fine for 10 minutes, then shut off. It rebooted to a black screen, accompanied by nine EXTREMELY loud beeps, and that was a RAM issue. Yours could be something similar maybe?

beeps are to let you know something is happening (usually something bad and hardware related, otherwise you would get the info through the screen, or maybe even from voice from the speakers)
And you should definitively take it to apple. If its working fine it proably something stupid but you never know... you dont want exploding batteries do you? :D

No its not that bad! its just intermittent!
I'm just calling Apple right now...

I called Apple... they got me to do:
  • a PRAM reset
  • boot from install disc
  • safe mode
  • Hardware test
  • re-install OS X software (to determine if it was a software issue)

The Tech guy said if after the re-install of OS X it doesn't work I might be able to get a replacement. They couldn't figure out what was making the beeping noise! I even done a Techtool deluxe diagnostic test (using CD that came with Apple Care and all the components passed the test).

What would you do if it was your brand new MBP and it was making the anoying beep noises? everythng runs fast even when I've got 10 apps open! would you get a replacement?

But the only thing that's stopping me is that I had my first MBP replaced because it had a faulty GPU with the lines on it. This time it doesn't have the faulty GPU (touch wood), but I'm scared it might do the next time round! The Tech guy said tests done on it would've shown up if it as a RAM issue! so it's just a random beep noise that no one knows what it is!

i dunno man its up to you but i would get it replaced. third times a charm!!

What exactly is the "beep" sound you are talking about?

On my MBP I occasionally hear a beep as well - it sounds like the one when for example the iChat connection has been interrupped and it warns you about it. Sometimes this "beep" would sound randomly, or several times in a row...and I would as well like to know what that is.....

Is that the one??

Actually I have the same situatiion as you. However, I do not have the beep problem unless I use earphones. Mind you, my UMBP 17inch was just replaced. I think it is an internal problem.

I'm getting it replaced as it was still under the 14-day thing... it's just a random beeping noise every 2-5 minutes which is sometimes a double beep and sometimes a triple beep.
