Based on my research, the information given when I start in Verbose and Safe Mode indicates that my 17" MacBook Pro has a failed Hared Drive:

My question is this: Can I safely dispose of this machine? I am concerned that the information on the drive may be accessible to someone with the right tools. I prefer to wipe the drive but I don't have the original system discs so am not able to boot that way.

In case the picture doesn't show up, about 10 lines up from the bottom it says "The volume Internal HD could not be repaired." and the last line is "Launch_msg(): Socket is not connected"

What year is your MBP? You should be able to replace the drive. Depending on the year, you could download a newer OS from the App Store. If you are going to dispose of your MBP, you can remove the drive and destroy it if you are concerned about security.
