Thoughts on when we may see this get updated?

I'm tempted to get the 15" now, but... I'm able to wait to see if the 17 gets updated. Hopefully will retain its 400 and 800 ports

As opposed to the seven other threads about the 17" redesign?

Silent at MacWorld.

sorry, forgot to search first.. was just something that popped into my head.

I know Macworld won't bare any fruits on this front. Could April sound like a possible guess? hmm

Nobody knows. We just have to wait. I don't see why Apple would keep the "old" design for the 17" model...unless they plan on just discontinuing it all together and just having 13" and 15.4" models.

True true...

Its just I can't see them updating at Macworld as it was 'refreshed' in October. Also, with news pointing to a MacMini and iMac update at Macworld, cant seem them doing a hat trick. If they did, it would be the MacPro or iPhone related.

Hmm, as you say, soon see. Just annoying =/

EDIT: Happy Christmas =)

Isn't the 17" more Pro-like? No one worried about it being Glossy only? Or is everyone waiting for a refurbished current generation?

If they update it, they better make the trackpad better. Obviously they'll use the new trackpads, but they better make it bigger. I love the 17" Macbook Pro, but the trackpad is terribly placed. It's too high up on the empty space of the palm rest, and it bugs the hell out of me.

I would hope that it does.

The Ti PowerBook 15.4 inch was introduced in 2001.

About 2 years later in 2003, the Aluminum 12 and 17 inch models were introduced.

About 10 months later, the Aluminum PowerBook 15 inch model was introduced.

Looking at the history of Apple laptops it's hard to say. My guess is that we will see a 17 inch Unibody introduced in 2009, and maybe a 13.3 inch Pro version.

The original 17" MacBook Pro was released 3 months after the 15".

Not a bit.

Apple might make only the 17" have matte and glossy options.

Maybe in late January or late February.

not trying to pick up a fight here, but wouldn't that mean Apple feels like the 17" is more pro-like?
Just like a 30"ACD compared to a 24"LED,no?
Right now they don't, but with the redesign, they might adjust the 17" so that it is more "pro" than the 15".

It appears that, with the redesign, the 15" MacBook Pro has moved a bit towards the "consumer" end. Maybe the redesigned 17" will stay where the current 17" is on the pro-consumer spectrum.

On the apple refurb site, they're listing 2.5 17" MBP's as 'previous generation', with the only difference with the ones on the new site is more ram and a slightly bigger hard drive.

I'm speculating this means there's a refresh of the line coming very soon.

On the flip side, the 17" PowerBook didn't get an upgrade at the release of the original MacBook Pro (at least I don't think it did). So we may be waiting for a while.

That is true. IIRC, 15" MBP annouced at Macworld, Shipped February then at NAB in April 06, we saw the 17" MBP. So, thats 2/3 months. So actually, January would fit quite nicely. Hmmmmmmmm
