I wish Apple hadn't discontinued the 17" MBPs ..

a true desktop replacement that's portable ..

it would be awesome .. with a retina screen, of course ..

Flogging a dead horse on this issue. Apple discontinued the 17" for a reason - very few bought it primarily due to the weight.

FWIW, the 15" rMBP have enough horsepower to be a desktop replacement.

No, a true desktop has at least a 24" screen and many now run 30" displays. A 17" is just a laptop that's too big to carry anywhere and too big to find space for when you get it there.

I carried around two 17" PowerBook G4s in one laptop bag for a few years.

I'm typing this on my new (couple of weeks) 32 bit MacBook Pro 17" (A1151). My 17" PowerBook G4 (A1013) is playing music on the table in front of me.

I love the 17" PowerBooks so in my need to get an MBP I got one that looks as close to the Albooks as possible.

Both the PB and the MBP do everything I need and I do not consider 17"s to not be portable, as I take my 17" PB to work with me every day.

All of that said, Apple is on a smaller, lighter, thinner design kick right now and I do not believe we will see a return to the 17" form factor any time soon.

One thing that might possibly occur, though still unlikely, is that the bezels might be removed while leaving the chassis the same size. That would essentially bump up the screens to 16″ and 14″, which would be right in line with the new 12″ MBP.

Same here….my 2009 17" is still working great but I grew tired of the direction Apple is taking laptops so I bought a Blackbook X 17" antiglare, all decked out. Absolutely love it. If you are in a financial position to afford one, I would highly recommend it.
