Interesting... Well your not suppose to sit on it I would be scared to sit on it in the first place. And I think its fine to give a middle school student an iPhone.

What's middle school?

In the US, usually grades 7 and 8, sometimes 6 through 8.

Elementary = K through 5 or 6
Middle School or Jr. High = 6,7,8 or 7,8 (depends on where)
High School or Sr. High = 9,10,11,12.

There's a lot of variations between districts and districts sometimes reshuffle as necessary (usually grade 6 gets moved) as school capacities change.

I'm surprised anyone would put their PHONE in a back pocket! That's just asking to bend it or crack the screen.

Also, personally anything in my back pockets is extremely annoying when I sit down, and can easily be pick-pocketed; I've always used my side pockets for my wallet, phone and keys.

And yeah, Li-Po batteries have a habit of exploding or catching fire when bent. Search "lithium battery fire" on YouTube. Hours of entertainment. Okay, minutes. :)

Most likely the top reasons why the students iPhone caught on fire:

- Used 3rd party charger
- Used 3rd party cable
- Used 3rd party battery
- Used 3rd party component in the unit [This can be anything]

and given that lots of people buy used items, it is also possible that the user has no idea about the 3rd party parts in/with her unit as lots of people are not knowledgable regarding this fact.

I have seen up close quality of the 3rd party chargers, cables, batteries and even iPhone screens. Ever since a incident in our family we have never gone with anything 3rd party, I even recommend people to just go get things from apple regardless of what it is because all the items have not been inspected and/or passed safety standards.

Given the # of bent units we have seen since iPhone 5, we have yet to see a report of any catching fire. Its most likely due to usage of 3rd party parts/components

I agree, this is the case 99% of the time, but you will still here the trolls screaming Apple makes dangerous products.

To me thus us not a substantiated iPhone issue. Is there a possibility the battery was replaced with an after-market battery? Or the iPhone was previously damaged? Or an after-market charger was used that damaged the electronics?

Amazing how, with these stories, we only ever get blurry photos and then never hear about them again.

Come on all. There are plenty of threads on here that prove the phone bent itself creating the issue. A clear manufacturing defect. Sitting on it was merely coincidence.

What's middle school?

The one between the two end schools, silly!:p

I know I shouldn't, but the image of some kid with her butt on fire from sitting on her phone made me laugh.

I know, it's a serious thing...and I'm embarrassed that I laughed, but putting your iPhone in your back pocket is...ah...not so smart.
