Overscan Issues

I finally got an Apple TV today. However, I am having some AirPlay issues from my MacBook Air.

Basically, the image that is being displayed on my TV is smaller than size of the TV (about a half inch border around the entire image). I have seen suggestions online that suggest turning off overscan in the Settings on the Apple TV. However, this only causes the image to be LARGER than the size of the TV. How do I get the image to take up exactly the size of my TV?

The resolution in the Display preferences on my MacBook Air matches the resolution of the TV (1080p).

I changed the "Picture Size" on my Samsung Smart TV from "16:9" to "Screen Fit" (Other brands might call this mode "Pixel-By-Pixel" or "Just Scan"). I then turned off the Overscan setting on the Apple TV and it now takes up the whole screen.

This is a silly problem to have in the year 2014. Especially now with digital HDMI inputs, why can't "output 1080p" just simply mean "output 1080p"?

My 11" Macbook Air matches the size of my 46" Sony Bravia TV perfectly. I actually tried turning the overscan setting on and off just to see what it would do, and nothing happened.

Do you have a 13" MBA perhaps? The 11" MBA has a 16:9 screen but the 13" MBA is 16:10, maybe that has something to do with it. I already had my TV set to show the entire image anyway.

Yes, I have the 13-inch. They really have different aspect ratios?

Either way, it is irrelevant. I am not mirroring. I am extending. It should be independently sending a 1080p signal to the Apple TV.

I have owned both an 11" and 13" MBA. The aspect ratios are definitely not the same, it has been discussed here frequently because some people have a strong preference for 16:10 screens.

Because TV makers are still buried in and paranoid about the past.

Also, the comparison you guys did with ATV vs laptop isn't going to really mean much. The ATV is built with TVs in mind and the laptop isn't, 2 different worlds, really, as far as resolution issues go.

You should not need to change your tv setting to anything other than 16:9.

Once you change your Apple TV overscan setting you should have a perfect picture.

"output 1080p" simply means that. it's the input that produces the
problem. probably because samsung's "smart"-TVs are not very smart in the end.
