Any wood turners on here? I've had an interest in it for a while and haven't gotten in to it because I haven't had the money to justify purchasing the equipment. I just learned that my future father in law has a free lathe in his basement I can use. I think I'm going to try my hand at making some shaving brushes as well as some other things.

So if you turn wood, what kind of projects do you like to work on?

I used to do it, but I got to a point where I was struggling to find a reason to turn anything.

With ebay these days I guess you can always sell stuff you make to recap the cost the of the wood.

I figure I could end up selling stuff, but it would probably only net a little bit of cash.

Yes, you wont make a profit but Its a good outlet for stuff. I was starting to drown to drown in bowls!

Its a fun hobby with a pretty easy learning curve, the only expensive part is the lathe so if you have access to one for free you might as well give it a go!

If you also have access to a router table, you could turn a 2"x2"x24" block of wood into a native American flute blank...

Drill, route, and file out a sound holes, fipple and flue...

And then use the lathe to turn out something like this...

A good deal of precise work is required, but if your finished product looks good, plays well, and sounds good, you could probably get around $100 and up for each one...
