Favorite Mac Keyboard Short Cuts

I was just wondering what keyboard shortcuts you guys use, which ones you like and what helps save time and stuff.

I know and use a few but i'm sure there will be more of them out there that we can all find useful!

So far, i realy like the shutdown shortcut (Ctrl + Optoin + Comand + Eject)
 
shut down?

why shut down? i like the spotlight shortcut and command h in safari cuz im constantly goning back to my hoempage cuz i have to authenticate for internet service at my college. anyone know a app that can pull a series of keystrokes and save me from the hassle of this?
 
Probably the one I use most often is Cmd-shift-4: screenshot of a user-defined part of the screen. Press space to take a shot of the whole window. This way you avoid using Grab altogether.

Cmd-opt-D toggles Dock hiding. And Cmd-ctrl-D is the contextual Dictionary lookup. That's really all the system-wide shortcuts I use on a regular basis
 
well, i shut down primarily cos i'm a student and any attempt to save money on the elecy bill is worth doing. Having said that, does anyone know how much power a PowerMac will use in sleep mode?

any more good shortcuts out there?

My iMac G5 uses 5 Watts (about as much as a broadband router) in sleep mode and about 60-75 Watts while on (yes, I have a Watt meter). I would assume your PM would be about the same in sleep mode. What you should really be concerned about are the small things that add up. I've seen TV's use 30-40 Watts while off, but still plugged in. Printers use about 5 Watts while appearing to be off. As you can see, it all adds up. Not sure what your electric cost is, but here its pretty high at about $0.15/kWh.

Back on topic, I use command-t in safari for new tabs, and command-w to close them ;-)
 
I'm gonna have to go with Command-Option-P-R when zapping the PRAM. The Mac OS succeeds in making yet another difficult task easy. It's like twister for your fingers!
 
I like shift+option+k=?, But every time I post it, it turns into a question mark when it's supposed to be the apple logo. Does anybody have a solution to this problem:confused:

Damn, it appeared as a ? mark instead of the symbol he posted. It's the option key. It's on the UK keyboard, but whenever we see a shortcut with option, it's the logo apple uses.

Yeah, it's just me being a smart a$$.
You need to use unicode to display them:

⌥ is displayed by typing ⌥ ;)
 
not really a keyboard shortcut, but still a short cut. If you have a mouse with a scroll wheel, put the arrow over the volume slider in itunes and scroll up or down with the wheel.

Not the most useful shortcut but definetly the coolest so far! Great find :D :D


Another useful shortcut all MR members should use is:

⌘+: :)

it's the font. that apple doesn't show up with all fonts. ⌘ is a pretty universal one but the apple seems to prefer Lucida sans unicode, chicago and a couple others i can't remember.

choose the lucida sans unicode font and then use the option shift k thing, it will show. :)

Hold it down and see what happens.

NVM, it used to crash the heck of out the widget and unexpectedly quit dashboard but it looks like the fixed it (tried in 10.4.4). Darn, was always fun to tell someone to do and watch them freak out when they think they broke dashboard. :p
