Applecare... is it worth buying?

Hey all. Here is the deal. Applecare is expensive, to say the least, but if you use it even once it will pay itself back. I am just wondering if i want to invest in it as a safeguard. I talked to my friend Isral, who has owned a 12 inch PB for a year and a half, and he had absolutely no problems with it until just this weekend... his hard drive fried! And, in his words "he had the foresight to waste $239 on applecare" so he didn't have to shell out bigs bucks, seeing as that the regular, one year warranty was finished on his PB. So I am thinking right now that I will get it, but I just want some imput from others.

It is a tough questions. I have had my powerbook for 2 years, and I had my harddrive die right after my initial 1 year warranty. I had applecare so all was good. I think applecare is a good idea if you plan on using your system for the entire time. It is cheap insurance if you use your system everyday for the next 3 years (ok, you can have a couple of days off ). If you usually go through hardware every year or so, then it isn't a good idea.

For a powerbook it's almost necessary...however, if you buy it with a credit card which doubles the manufacturer's warranty you almost get to Applecare length for free. Something to consider...

You need to read the post about all the screen issues with the new Powerbooks. I would not be caught dead without it. The amount of money it costs you, could save you in the long run.

Yeah, but these new PowerBooks are within the initial 1 year warranty anyway though, right? So they can get them fixed under this warranty. Since most problems will show up within the first few weeks of use (disregarding outright hardware failure due to use), I think it could be fairly safe to say that there shouldn't be too much of an issue with getting it fixed for a while.

I didn't get AppleCare with my MacBook Pro.... I've kind of gone back and forth in my mind as to whether or not I made a good decision... guess I'll see. Can you purchase it after you receive it, like within 30 days of purchase or something? If it has major problems I might would get it then, but if not, live freely.

You have a year to purchase AppleCare.

I need to buy it for my Powerbook. I have until September though.
