The 17PM is stuck at software update. Progress bar stuck at zero. Already transferred phone number to new phone so I’m stuck without a working phone. Already tried restarting. Any ideas?

If you have another Apple device, reach out through chat in the support app. They can provide the best possible solution, I’d imagine.

Or see if your provider can switch the numbers back. They should have a chat summary as well. But with it being launch day, the wait times are more than likely, significant.

I have never experienced this type of situation, I would not know where to begin with trouble shooting.

You're not alone. Normally I'm super impressed with the ease of new iphone setups and data transfer. New 17PM got stuck at 'Signing in' so I restarted. This time I tried doing the software update since I had skipped that before, thinking it may fix some bugs. The update has been stuck at 0% for extended time with no UI indication of what's happening. Tried restarting a couple times too. Tried with both wifi and data.

So still stuck here at the moment

EDIT: I do notice 'AppStore - Performance' shows as degraded on https://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/ , so perhaps something is down on their end impacting this too.

Chatted with Apple support who said "We are facing some issues while updating the device". They suggested a force restart (vs normal one) but still getting stuck here the same way on the Software Update.

They said they're working on the issue. Sounds we just have to wait and try again later.

Skipping the Software Updates, and doing the rest of phone setup over data plan allowed me to get through to a useable phone. You have to make sure wifi is off at every setup step before pressing continue.

Turning off wifi during setup -> If you see the wifi icon in the corner at any time during setup, then turn off wifi to force data usage BEFORE pressing continue to go next step. I had to do this multiple times on different steps to force data usage. To get to wifi settings during the setup phases, hold the power button and a menu will popup where one of the options will be wifi settings. It will only be available if you see the wifi icon in the top right.

It was the most frustrating iPhone setup in recent memory. I finally found the way to proceed without updating. Then I got stuck for hours trying to restore from backup. It never worked so I set up as new. Lots of time wasted today and I did not enjoy it.
