Hi, everyone.

I was planning to update with a clean install of 18.5 my 11” M2 iPad Pro, but I’ve read in some other forums that some people, especially with the M1 model, were having overheating issues, especially watching videos on the browser.

Do you notice this behaviour on 18.5? Do you experience overheating while watching videos on the browser? Mine is still on 18.3 and keeps quite fresh while streaming video, even with an external monitor attached, but I’m concerned about it because I stream a lot of videos on my iPad’s browser, and heat degrades the battery…

Users of both M1 and M2 iPad Pro on 18.5, what are your experiences?

I have the M1 Pro with 16GB of ram (2tb version cellular) and it runt 18.5 great. I generally use it for watching movies in bed but that's thru apps such as Netflix.
Haven't used it with my USB-C dock and stage manager for a good while, tried it today and can't really describe it but it feels more "fluent" than it used to. Feels like stage-manager is getting small updates for every version to make it better and better.

Installed AI recently on it (I'm in the EU so haven't had access to it) and it seems to run the basic things fine. Haven't noticed any difference in battery performance after I enabled it.

Good! Thanks. Mine is the M2 cellular 1TB version… but I asked about the M1 opinions and experiences because all the posts I read about overheating issues are linked to the M1 on 18.5

Appreciate your experience, and I’ll think what do I do, because honestly, 18.3.1 runs smooth and I haven’t had any issues aside from the typical glitches and bugs of iOS 18.

Haven't read anything regarding overheating on the M1, do you have any links? Would be interesting to know when or how it happens.

I have an 11 inch m2 pro. Haven’t noticed it overheating at all since I installed 18.5 RC. Runs pretty much just like 18.4

Thank you, although the final release is a different build, but at least it helps knowing that until the RC everything runs fine.

Yeah, this are some links referring to the M1 iPad Pro/Air:

Battery drain:

And here, someone asked 2 hours ago the same as myself:

Here’s a case of the M4 on 18.4.1

I’m not sure, mine works fresh and great in 18.3.1, but I’m curious about Apple Intelligence and the few more features included, as well as the alleged performance increase.

The "find my" issue is something I have heard and read of a good few times, not just in relation to 18.5 but most versions. Not sure why that happens tbh. I have never come across it. Maybe its related to people having Airtags or some other peripheral attached.
Since it has been around for a few OS releases I'm guessing that if you don't see it now you won't have an issue on 18.5 either.

The first post is the M1 Air, and while the pro and air have similarities there are also differences.
Its quite a specific case, landscape, watching movies in the webbrowser.
I can imagine its what they speculate in, codec, maybe running high-res and doing so in a browser.
I don't stream 4K when using Netflix or other services, that might be why I or others haven't come across overheating.

I have tried a bit of gaming on it, but nothing extremely GPU/CPU intensive (Oxenfree2) seems to run fine.

When looking at answers on the above links it points more towards people that don't have any issues tbh.

When it comes to Apple AI my personal opinion is that its not worth upgrading the OS for, its still halfbaked but slowly getting there. But looking at the official security issues that's fixed (and some where severe) its worth it for that alone.
And that's the official ones, there's prob a pile of non official ones that's fixed too.

I upgraded to the final release when available, so it's running fine as well for me. Actually first time I hear about any potential overheating issues.

Really? Aren’t writing tools that useful after all?
I haven't tried that part yet, tried the image stuff and also Siri and the extended chatGPT feature.
I do use CoPilot a lot and the standalone ChatGPT app, but what I would like to see is a better more seamless integration between Siri and AI. Not saying its an easy task to achieve and take privacy into consideration. So I'm ok with waiting untill Apple finetunes things.

Note to self: Try out the writing tools on both iPad and the new phone 😁

Yeah, that’s actually the main feature I’m interested in. For chatGPT or Claude I already use their respective apps and prefer them not integrated with the whole system. I want to control what’s sent to OpenAI servers.
