Second time this has happened, closed MBP and put in my bag. Upon pulling it out of my bag when I arrive home the entire chassis is extremely warm...I mean warm and no fans running...just baking inside my bag.

I checked my energy saver preferences and everything looks normal settings wise.

In all likelihood the computer was not off or had woken itself off while in the bag, this is one reason why I don't like how the newer Macs aren't really off when you power them down.

Should I be worried about any heat damage?

I did just notice I was allowing bluetooth devices to wake my MBP up. I also have my Magic Mouse stashed in my bag and I bet that while traveling around the Magic Mouse is being clicked.

Care to explain what you mean by "power them down"? Are you referring to shutting down your computer?

Yes, turning the computer off/shutting it down is not really turning it off. The 2018 MBP "wakes" up from a shut down state when opening the case, or hitting a key. That tells me that its still having power running through it in some fashion.

Is that still "fixable" through the terminal?
If so, by which command?
If not, how do you intend to "fix" it?

Is there a chance having been subjected to this that the integrity of the machine has been altered? Is there safety measures implemented to shut down the MBP if it gets too hot?

I am within my return window, which is why I ask.

I'm not sure it works like that.
If you shut it down in the system it goes in a complete turn off state like any regular Mac, once the lid is opened it must work like if you pressed the ON button, giving it electric current to turn on. It makes sense to work like this instead of letting the computer be "ON" all the time.

Did you shut the computer off in MacOS? If you only closed the lid the computer is in sleep mode and can still run the hardware, unlike if its completely turned off on MacOS.

I just closed the lid.

The fact that the trackpad still clicks when the computer is off really makes it seem like the computer is never really off, very weird.

But that means the computer is on all the time. Unless you think it detects an opened screen by magic whilst off ? There are no physical swtiches, and any sensor needs power.

This exact same thing once happened my 2014 machine - it was roasting - far hotter than normal and the battery was dead when I opened it. Whatever happened was abnormal I think, and possibly bad, but since it never happened again I've not worried about it.
