Well I installed a 2nd drive, SSD and everything still works but the SSD is not showing up on the desktop or in Disk Utility? Any thoughts?

late 2012 4xi7 16 g ram Yosemite 10.10.2
Should I restart it holding down some key combination?

If it's not showing up in Disk Utility make sure it is properly connected and push on all the connectors to make sure nothing is loose. If that doesn't solve the problem you may have a bad data cable or SSD.

thanks, will do. I am sad it is not showing but happy everything still works.

If you are going to dismantle the mini you check which item may have failed by either plugging another drive onto the 2nd drive ribbon to test the cable or put the SSD into a usb caddy, ( assuming you have both a caddy and spare drive )

I have both. That means I will have to disassemble and reassemble the mini completely at least twice? (place head slap here) :(
Oh well, live and learn. At least I should be good at the procedure after that :D Thanks again all!

It's very easy to dislodge the SATA cable connector from the logic board when re-assembling the mini. I went thru the same thing.

When I took it apart (fan, antenna and cowling) the cable looked like it was in OK. I popped it off and re connected it. Looked the same as before i unhooked it. So now I have resigned myself to do the complete tear down. Thanks for your help.

Try booting and running the SSD externally for a while, using a USB3/SATA docking station.

Do this, and it will solve a whole bunch of headaches!

Good news bad news

WOW! I put the SSD in my USB external and it works. I installed the 200G HD (from the external USB unit) in the mini and it works as well??
So much for faulty components, looks like cockpit error:eek:

@*&^&%$#$*& SSD unmounted?

So My SSD mounted and all was well. I downloaded Yosemite to install in/on the SSD and when it was done downloading I got the message "SSD not properly ejected" and it is now no where to be found???
I restarted and still not there and it does not show in Disk Utility? I have not moved the mini, so it should not have popped off the connecter?
Any thoughts?
