So with the new Retina MacBook having USB C, maybe this is why Apple is holding off launching a new Thunderbolt Display. Is the new MacBook Pro going to have a load of these new USB C connectors instead. As it can support 4K over USB C and then by the look of the expensive adaptors Apple have launched, it can also split into other things like standard USB & HDMI etc.

Just my thoughts anyway, what does everyone else think?

Oh of course, I forgot about 5K, probably won't be a USB C display then.

What about having both?

As I understand it, there is no 5K ATD right now because you need DisplayPort 1.3 (which which comes with Thunderbolt 3. DP 1.3 is also part of the USB 3.1 spec, so maybe a new Thunderbolt display could also contain a USB 3.1 port, and video could be passed over one or the other?

I realize the new MB can only push UHD video, but maybe the next update will be able to push 5K to external monitor.
