Not gonna happen.
The new macbook cannot charge and connect a thunderbolt display at the same time.
The thunderbolt display is still around and can be connected to any other macbook air or pro.

Two completely different technologies, so I wouldn't count on it. Get the air or the pro instead.

USB C only means Apple has surrendered Thunderbolt to the grim reaper. I expect the NEW displays to be USB C.

You will be able with the next monitor from Apple late this year. It will be wireless connected. Probably at WWDC along with apple tv will be announced

You can't run a 5K display on anything but a nMP in teh apple line up. 4K yes but not 5K the connection bandwidth isn't there yet on HDMI or Display port technology. The nMP can do it with 2 thunderbolt cables and 2 graphics cards.

It just further shows that the new Macbook is not intended to be used as a desktop or production/workstation without thunderbolt (via adapter).

It does seem more and more like a glorified netbook even though people hate calling it that.

Nothing glorified about it

It is the ultimate netbook that will run OSX and apple apps as well as any previous generation macbook air.
