apps homescreen layout

am i the only one that rather have this kind of layout instead of a scattered icon layout?

they've conditioned us with the iPhone app layout, why can't they continue using that?
it'll also make sense considering the square screen shape.

I like the Watch OS icons. It's perfect for a smaller screen.

I also like how it is now. I don't want my phone's UI copy and pasted onto a smaller screen.

here's a quick mock-up.

just saying, from a usability stand point… OSX launchpad, and iPhone layout they work pretty well. Since the content should be dictate by the format.
It would also maximize the functionality of the screens real estate.

I think they are trying to avoid it looking like a tiny iphone on your wrist.

i don't mine the circular icon shape, i do like it like that. does a good job to simplify the icon for quick glances.

just the layout that bothers me.

The purpose of the constellation layout now is also to make it nearly impossible to detect screen edges.

I have a hunch that the reason the home page is laid out the way it is, and also the reason why the icons and a lot of elements are circular, is because apple plans on releasing a round apple watch in the future (like the moto360) and that the rectangular form factor of the the current apple watch is only a temporary design.

still doesn't sound like apple to do something just for the sake of being different; with no practical purpose to it. Take the iPad for example, people said it's just an enlarged version of the phone. Yes, but it's practical purpose is the usability. We already know how to use it from the iphone.

long shot here… might be the power issue? less active area for the screen to be lit? same goes for the circle icon as well?

i don't mind the square face. it's practical and efficient. more room for battery and component to fit in a square, then a circle. Also most of the content will need a square shape. it's so difficult to design or show text in a circle.

i agree on the fluid nature and search-ability...if you have a low number of apps. the search-ability problem will increase dramatically when you have more and more apps.

imagine once you have zoomed in, and trying to pan around to find anything without any reference point to where the edge are.
you can zoom out, but i doubt you can pinpoint select the smaller app icons.
