This is a long post, but worth a read if you are into headphones.....

I've been looking for a new set of headphones/earphones for a while to replace the cheap EarPods that came with my iPhone 7. I was mostly looking at the different wireless options. Unfortunately the EarPods and thus the AirPods do not fit my ears very well. I can use them, but they fall out if there's any sort of fast motion. Another annoyance is that most of the wireless options use micro-USB to charge, and I'd rather not have to carry another cable when I travel. So that leaves the Beats X as the only other wireless earphones that use a lightning adapter to charge, and I was not overly impressed with the sound quality.

When I was in the Apple Store I noticed the Pioneer Rayz, which are lightning headphones just like the lightning EarPods that come with iPhones. I was curious about these, so I did some reading about them. It ends up that lightning headphones are capable of better sound quality than headphones that use a normal 3.5mm headphone jack. Unlike the 3.5mm jack which is analog, the lightning connector is digital, so the headphones must contain their own digital-to-analog converter (DAC). This is why you need that special adapter to use regular headphones with the new iPhones -- the adapter has the DAC. Different headphones have different quality DACs. A very high quality DAC, along with high quality earphones, will have superior sound quality to any regular headphones getting their sound from the cheap DAC that is built into most phones.

So I started reading reviews of various lightning headphones (there are actually quite a few on the market now), and without exception the Triple Driver Lightning Headphones by 1More got the best reviews. Many reviews claimed the sound quality on par with other headphones costing as much as $500-800. The price of the 1More Triple Driver Lightning Headphones is $150. And on Black Friday weekend, they were on sale for 30% off with free shipping, so I snagged a pair for $105.

I received them this week, and I have to say that they sound awesome. The clarity and fidelity is unreal. If you do decide to get a pair, make sure to do the following.... First, spend the time to do the burn-in process using their app. Second, spend some time to choose the right sleeves for your ears -- they come with 9 different ones, and choosing the right one is extremely important. Upon first listening to the headphones, there was no bass, and my first thought was that they were terrible. Then I read that with in-ear headphones, you need a perfect seal in your ear or else you will not get any bass. Well, isn't that the truth! I ended up trying 4 different sleeves, and when I finally found the right one, the bass is awesome. It's hard to believe that the sleeve makes that much difference in sound quality, but it does!

Anyway, for anyone looking for a great set of wired headphones for their iPhone or iPad, these are a definite winner! 1More has a 30 day return policy, so they are definitely worth trying out.
