Hello all, I've recently purchased a 1st get 5gb. Long time searching for a good one to complete my classic iPod trio:

However I'm facing some problems when syncinc with my 5,1 Mac Pro. I've tried with both High Sierra and Sonoma, in both cases the OS just crashes as I plug in the iPod. I'm using a firewire 800 to 400 adapter. Maybe that's the problem? Is there any adapter known to work, or maybe the iPod could have some damage?

Thanks in advance!

These two suggestions are unrelated to each other but hope they help:

-Put the iPod into DFU mode and see what happens.
-What happens if the charger is plugged into the wall instead of the computer?

If all else fails, do like me and keep it around just keep it for historical/nostalgic purposes.

Hi, thanks for your reply. The wall brick charger works just fine. And putting into DFU makes no difference.

I have finally ended up testing with different OS versions, ending up with Mojave, that do the job. Earlier versions don't keep iTunes servers updated, so was impossible to sync. And newer versions, as said, just crashed. I never read something about that here, but it's ok I finally made the trick myself.

That’s interesting; I have been nothing short of impressed that Apple has baked iPod support so deeply into the OS that later models (5th Gen Classic) sync via the new Finder method.

Thanks for sharing what you’ve found. Can you provide the iTunes version you’re using that works?

I do have a thought - if it’s going back a few systems to find software that works, they’re all talking to Apple’s servers in much the same way. Perhaps it’s an interface issue with FireWire more than software? Just a theory.

The iTunes version that do connect to Apple's servers for 1st gen syncing is 12.9, the one that comes with MacOS Mojave.

Despite the problem with iTunes servers' issues and older iPods, I agree that there are some glitches (at least I got them) with firewire and newer OSs. Maybe older iPods do something 'weird' on the interface. Again, this is for a MacPro 5,1, I don't have any other mac with firewire to test on. Unfortunately the MacbookPro on my profile picture motherboard died recently :(.
