Hello,
This may have been discussed.
I am a new member looking to jump into the iphone mania
I currently have Treo 650 with ATT PDA unlimited data plan. I tried to use my friend's unlocked iphone, and it works (voice and data)

I have few questions:
1) Will a locked 1st gen iphone accept my ATT SIM card for voice and data?
2) Will a locked 3G iphone accept my ATT SIM card for voice and data?
3) If I get an unlocked 3G iphone (in the future), will the data rate be a 3G or the 2G (or 2.5G) data rate, using my current ATT SIM card?

The reason I ask these questions is, I do not want to renew my ATT contract. I currently pay $70 for 450 mins, 2 lines, including 1 unlimited data plan.

Thanks for the answers

1G phone will work, but you will need to renew your contract to activate.

really?
I mean, few days ago I tried my friend's unlocked iphone, and it worked great without activating it again.

Does ATT know (detect) if my SIM card is used with iphone or other phone type?

please enlighten me.
thank you

As long as it is unlocked or even jail broken using an at&t sim, then it should work. Just make sure data is activated... I think my sister got charged for using an unlocked iphone and the data kept sending and receiving bytes.

If you don't need a data plan, you can call AT&T and have them disable data on your SIM card. Then once you unlock your iPhone, you will be able to use it like any other phone without unexpected data charges.

That's exactly it - and you have one of the best usernames on this site. :D
