I have a 1st Generation iPod Touch 32GB (had it from new)

A few months ago I had problems with iTunes not recognising it and did some internet research which led me to try to extract it's software (can't even remember what I did exactly), but it's not helped the problem.

Thought I'd have another go at trying to sync it with iTunes.......

So this time I connected it to iTunes, iTunes recognises the iPod, and then I get a message box pop-up saying the iPod is in recovery mode and I 'must restore'........ I press 'restore' and along the top (where artist / song title is displayed) iTunes says "extracting software" ....soon afterwards I get a message saying that 'The iPod could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1) ..... and that's as far as I can go!

When I tried this a few months ago, I was also getting message pop-ups saying .... 'iTunes could not connect to the iPod touch "Scoot65's iPod" because an invalid response was received from the device'

and .....

'iTunes could not contact the iPod software update server because you are not connected to the internet'

These messages didn't appear this time.

The charging port seems the work OK, I plug the iPod in (using a wall socket) and it starts
charging.

Anyone got any ideas as to what the problem is and how to resolve it?
I'd appreciate any help.
