My first gen macbook is running with a CPU temp of 71 degrees celcius while running nothing. The mds and mdworker processes are taking up most of the processor and it wont change after quitting the processes or restarting or shutting down the computer.

mds and mdworker processes are Spotlight indexing your drive
They should stop eventually (minutes or hours). You can't kill them, they come back!
If you have an external drive you plug in and remove often, you might want to disable Spotlight indexing of that drive, go to System Preferences > Spotlight and drag the external drive into the "do not index" pane.
