Given the latest releases, none of which are compatible with the 1st Generation Mac Pro, is it time for me to settle for the 8800?

The 8800 really still is a great video card. I'd go with it. I have one in my windows PC and it works great.

4870 works in all Mac Pros apparently… GTX 285 could as well, even if not "officially". No harm in waiting to see.

This is what I have:

Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier: MacPro1,1
Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
Number Of Processors: 2
Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
Memory: 16 GB
Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz

NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT w/256MB

My Pro Apps run kinda crappy on my graphics card.

The new ATI card will work in my machine? I know ATI is better for ProApps.

Does this mean older mac pros can use the new LED Apple displays? I have a 1st gen mac pro and would love to upgrade to one of those new LED displays.

With a graphics card that features a Mini DisplayPort, this seems likely.

When 10.5.7 comes out, could I purchase a GeForce GT 120 or Radeon 4870... put it in my 1st gen Mac pro and be able to actually use that card?

Is there any confirmation that the 4870 works in the first generation Mac Pro?

If I were to choose, I would go with the 8800GT. It's a very decent card. Reviews are great also.

YES YES YES YES YES YES

I have used both OEM & flashed 4870s in my 1,1.

Works great. Quit worrying and order one !!!!!

Nice to know. I'd love to have a (mini)DisplayPort on my 2006 Mac Pro.
Its too bad the new LED Apple 24" Cinema has such a short display cable. My Mac is too far away I think for me to use it; I've already got the cable on my DVI Cinema Display stretched as far as it'll go and it just barely makes it. I think the new display has a shorter cable and moving the Mac itself is less of an option.
