1tb Toshiba external drive stopped working with my Macbook

Hi,

I have a 1tb Toshiba external drive that I was using on my 2007 Macbook without issue until recently when it decided to suddenly stop working. Nothing at all was changed within the Macbook, I've read in some places that there is a problem with drawing enough power from the usb port to power the drive but have tried going through a usb port and using a longer alternate cable...

The light comes on and then starts flashing intermittently

Any advice gratefully received!
