No it isn't. You have to know excatly where to find it now. When it is released, you will be able to get it directly from iTunes. That it a very different scenario.

It's the exact same file no matter how you load it onto the phone

But dont they HAVE to release it today? because iphone 3g is already released in new Zealand so 2.0 is technecally already released is it not? just not released for the iphone 2g yet? correct me if im wrong

If you wanted to be technical, they don't HAVE to release it ever.

While it is sitting out there on the Apple servers, Apple has plenty of reasons to hold it back, whether it be technical like last minute tweaks, or that they're just waiting until the 3g iphone comes out everywhere first. (Don't want to lose a 3g sale because someone tried out the new firmware first and decided they didn't need a hardware upgrade as well).

The only places they have to release it is in those that previously had the iPhone on sale. And they don;t have to do that until tomorrow some time...

You are correct. They don't necessarily HAVE to release it today. All iPhone 3G's come preloaded with 2.0.

As mentioned, though, you can download 2.0 and manually install it on the original iPhone by following the link that's posted on the main page.

There remains some question at to whether that it a final release version or not...

Maybe only people who actually have a 3G iPhone can download it at this point? I doubt anyone has tried yet. I could imagine them delaying it somewhat for the reason mentioned in DeaconGraves' post.

My manually downloaded version works perfectly.
Apps run smooth and no crashes. So at least now I will have something to play with (appropriate for all ages) while I wait wait wait wait wait wait in line.
And I am not getting there early either.
