Ah but these setup in hardware raid one in my OWC dual drive FW800 enclosure will give me capacity with safety.

I'm just saying, this model is plagued with firmware issues. RAID 1 does no good if both drives are equally susceptible to an increased rate of failure.

Indeed there is a firmware upgrade available from Seagate. I shall verify these drives require the update before moving all my archives to them.

There have been many reports of these drives dying or stuttering even when Seagate says that all is well and they aren't affected, and they won't do anything to help. I would not touch anything from Seagate right now no matter how cheap. Ever wonder why these great deals exist in the first place? And everybody has them cheap? Seagate is obviously trying to dump product.
