After some experimenting last night I found that Youtube on the Iphone can now run at the High Quality setting (&fmt=18 setting) ( previously it would run at the normal quality setting)

1)
Try playing this video on your iPhone ( wi-fi)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjSZ5R80bjs

(search for Gundam 00 Opening 01 HD if you don't want to type )
The video in Question is a Anime Opening, that has several small particles and runs at a 24fps.

2)
Now Compare the quality of the iPhone video to the following on your computer

Normal Quality
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjSZ5R80bjs

High Quality
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjSZ5R80bjs&fmt=18

You will notice that the video on the iPhone plays at a similar quality and compression as the High quality video

The iPhone will still NOT run the video at HD quality :( ( &fmt=22)

(edited for grammar) cheers :D

Do you mean that with the 2.2.1 update, YouTube videos are Wi-Fi quality over 3G and Edge?

Nope 3g/Edge videos are still... really really poor quality

What I meant to say is that now the iPhone will choose the higher quality version of a youtube video ( if it was uploaded in high quality)

let me try to make it as clear as possible

2.2

3G/edge= the iPhone will play a very low bitrate version of a video
Wifi- the iPhone will play the "normal" quality version of the video

2.2.1

3G/edge= the iPhone will still play a very low bitrate version of a video
Wifi- the iPhone will now play the "high" quality version of the video (if it exists)

LOL I wish you picked a different YouTube video. After watching that clip for 10 seconds I threw up a little in my mouth.

Ah. I see.
Thanks for informing us about that.
However, is there a way to choose the lower-quality one?

well if you can find another video that

is short
has particle effects
is encoded in different version

we can use that video as another example

either way once an anime fan, always an anime fan

The High quality link you posted looks great on my 2.2 iPhone... Is it possible that the update came from youtube and not apple?

I'm not sure when HQ videos started working on my phone, but I'm running 2.2.1 and HQ videos are looking super-sharp over wifi. Nice!

I don't think this was a 2.2.1 update item. I had been noticing that YouTube videos would always look better and much higher in quality when I was on Wi-Fi as opposed to 3G. No matter what. Just simply switching Wi-Fi on when viewing the same video always resulted in a much better viewing experience. I discovered this months ago back in October already. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is what I noticed in my own experience.

too be honest I don't know when the change occured either

when I tried a high quality video some time last year, i would only get the lower quality version

perhaps this is more to do with youtube then the actual 2.21 upgrade
