is the 2.5 significantly faster than the 2.4 and how much faster is 2.6 than bolth?

The only gain you will see 2.4 to 2.5 is in the small processor clock speed increase. Going from 2.5 to 2.6, you'll see some gain from the clock speed increase and some gain from the increased on-die cache. Of course, neither of these will make your Facebook or Twitter faster. . . .

Personally, I went with the 2.5 simply because I wanted the larger hard drive. Since I got a Government employee discount, the price difference was only $60 between the 2.4 and the 2.5 with the 500 GB, 7200 RPM HDD. That small price differential made it a no brainer to order the slightly faster processor--that I fully recognize I will NEVER see any benefit from, except perhaps on resale--and not go after market on the HDD. (Yes, I realize if I went after market I'd have two HDDs instead of just one . . . but if you knew how many excess 2.5" HDDs I had laying around my house, you'd understand).
