Hi

I know that most 3.5" external HD (ie WD My Book, etc) do have power management / sleep function that puts the HD into sleep after a period of inactivity...

i was wondering if some 2.5" ext HD have it too ?

i was thinking of buying a 2.5" ext HD to be connected at all times with my mac as 2.5" are quieter (but still quite fast thanks to firewire 800)

any model that i should consider ?

thx

I think there is sleep function in all drives, just check the "Put HDs to sleep when possible" box in Energy Saver preferences

thx

i thought that it would work with internal drives only

but actually, i was thinking about the manufacturer's own power saving function

for instance, i recently tried a WD My Book Studio, the HD goes to sleep on its own after a few minutes when it's not in use

it usually goes to sleep before the internal drive

i was thinking that 2.5" external drives would do that too but so far, i've found any model

some manufacturers are not giving detailed specs...

yesterday i tried a WD Passport, the drives keeps spinning while the internal drives was on sleep

i guessed that as long as the external drive is powered by the usb port, it is not subject to the power saving settings of the mac...

or maybe, this functionality only exists on 3.5" drives, not on 2.5...
