2.5 in portable external hard drive for time machine back ups?

My macbook pro has a 72rpm 500gb hard drive, & I would like to back it up with time machine, would a portable hard drive work for this? & any suggestions as to a model?
 
Yes, it will work perfectly fine.

I bought a 500GB Seagate external HDD for $54. I personally dislike Time Machine so I use CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner).
