2 ipads. shared account....help needed

Please bear with me as ipad newbie. Have had itunes accoun for years as a long term ipod user. Now have 2 ipad airs and utilise a shared account. Problrm is that whilst both can access any of the purchased games etc it seems impossible to run seperate game progresses...if that makes sense. It seems that the game app wont seperate between two users via one apple account ....maybe im missing something here.....any simple advice truly appreciated
