iPod 2 Nanos cannot connect to any PC

My son has a 500k Nano and my wife has a 2G Nano. They have both stopped working at the same time.
When I plug them into a PC's USB port WinXP and WinVista say the device has malfunctioned.

I have tried this on 5 computers now, including one when someone elses nano was working fine.

I don't believe it is the PCs or the USB ports. It must be the Nanos.

I have been using VPOD software with both Nanos, but this seemed to be working fine. I don't think it is related to that.

I had to reinstall my PC due to a motherboard failure. It was at about this time the nanos stopped working.

I have done a reset and gone into diagnostics. I also tried disk mode, but that didn't work with the PC.

Please help. My family will disown me if I cannot get this sorted soon.

Are your USB connections working?

Yes. I have tried it on 5 computers now. One of which worked fine with another nano.
