I have 2 iPhone 8 Plus phones (work / personal). For over a month, I have been wrestling with both, when selecting an app, the app will go dark, but not launch. It takes repeated steps to force re-start both. I have restored the phones from the iCloud. I have restored the phones as new. I have spent about 12 hours on the phone with various Apple representatives, including waiting times. I have spent about 2 hours with the AT&T Mobile representatives, but they have self-proclaimed they are not a repair shop. I tried to use my AT&T insurance to replace the phone, but I was denied, pending my efforts to get the phone diagnosed by Apple, or repaired at an Apple authorized vendor.
I was given a tip to download and execute the software app, Gasbuddy. I was directed by Apple engineers (via a phone rep who corresponded with the engineers via email) to update to iOS 12. The problems have persisted in both iOS resident applications and unrelated third party software applications. Apple has very generously charged my account US$950.00, for fears there isn't anything wrong with my phone(s), and that I'm using the "bad" phone scenario to sell the "broken" phone upon receipt of a replacement. I'm waiting for the replacement phone, and then will use the delivery box to ship the broken phone back to Apple.
