I'm guessing this isn't possible since I haven't read about anyone doing it. However, I thought I'd throw it out there just in case:

Is it possible to have a CDMA iPhone 5 (e.g. Verizon or Sprint) and then insert an AT&T mini-SIM from another iPhone and thus, have both numbers active on one phone? I will receive an AT&T iPhone 5 for work and will also have a personal iPhone 5. It this is possible, I then wouldn't have to carry 2 pieces of hardware.

Would appreciate any thoughts!

Nope.
You can use either or, not both CDMA and GSM running together to connect to 2 different networks and phone numbers at the same time with the same device.
And the verizon i5 will still need its own sim card inside.
