My setup is as followed:
Hdd bay = Sandisk extreme 240gb sata 3
Optical bay caddy = owc optical bay, support for sata 3
Optical owc bay drive = seagate momentus xt 750gb/8gb hybrid sata 3
Speed review
Sandisk extreme 275mb/s write v. 500mb/s read
Seagate momentus xt 110 mb/s read and write, with most accessed files being placed on the 8gb ssd on board drive storage ( hybrid )
I use Sandisk first for OS X Lion and now mountain lion, applications, desktop folder, documents folder, downloads folder and public folder.
I use the seagate momentus xt for music, pictures and movies folder.
Owc advise people not to use sata 3 connection of te optical drive by only using sata 2 drives since they did not had a MacBook Pro 8,3 17 inch that successfully went threw their testing procedures as not being stable, referring to the spinning beach ball affect.
I must say so far I experience a fast and stable system, till up now no spinning beach ball. I cannot clearly explain why this macbook pro 17 experience different results than most from the same generation MacBook Pro 17 inch early 2011.
In my system report is saying Hard drive bay link and negotiated speed 6 gigabit, same for the optical bay.
About 1 month I will give my review of this system after three months of usage to give a more elaborate my experience.
More people who successfully use two sata 3 drives in their early 2011 MacBook Pro 15 and 17 inch model?.......and which drives are in your setup?........and let us know your experience in usage.
