20" 2.0 alum screen problems

i have a 20" imac 2.0ghz i've been having problems with the screen it doesn't show up when i have a application open just on the desktop or screensaver. it has vertical lines in the display.
my imac is a couple years old with no applecare
is there anything i can do?
